CCCPA Participates in the Challenges Forum Workshop for Co-Chairs of the Leadership Toolkit Project
Stockholm, Sweden – CCCPA participated in the workshop organized by the Challenges Forum Secretariat from 8-9 March 2018, to revise and update the “Considerations for Mission Leadership in UN Peace Operations Study”, published in 2010. The workshop brought together the co-chairs of the Leadership Toolkit Project with the aim to critically review the content of the Considerations Study and support the development of additional pedagogical tools.

The workshop addressed key emerging issues facing today’s mission leaders, including strengthening political engagements, protection of civilians, operating in asymmetric environments, ensuring the safety and security of mission personnel, and preventing sexual exploitation and abuse. As co-chair of Task Force 2, CCCPA leads and coordinates the revision of the chapters relating to the ‘Political Process’ and ‘Sustaining Peace’ in the Considerations Study. In this regard, CCCPA emphasized the need to refocus efforts on sustaining peace in accordance with the Statement of the President of the Security Council - S/PRST/2017/27

Furthermore, CCCPA – in collaboration with representatives of the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) – delivered a session on the integration of gender perspectives in the Considerations Study. The session discussed the approach to gender mainstreaming in the new publication, focusing specifically on gender analysis tools and the use of gender-sensitive language.

The Leadership Toolkit Project aims to contribute to stronger and more effective leadership of UN peace operations, including special political missions. A key output in this work strand is the Considerations Study, which is developed by the Challenges Forum Partners, in close cooperation with the UN Secretariat, with the purpose of serving as a hands-on tool and reference document for mission leaders. Since its publication, the study has been widely used by peace operations training institutions in member states, and in the UN senior mission leaders (UNSML) course. The revised Considerations Study should be finalized and published in 2019.

Other co-chairs of the Leadership Project include the United Service Institution of India (USI), Australian Civil-Military Centre (ACMC), Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute (PKSOI), and the Institute of Security Studies of South Africa (ISS).
