The Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding in Cairo (CCCPA) hosted, in partnership with Adelphi and the support of GIZ, the regional expert consultation on climate security in North Africa on 30 April 2023, with the participation of the African Union Commission (AUC), COP27 Presidency and representatives from the North Africa Regional Capability (NARC), Union du Maghreb Arabe (UMA), as well as the African Union Youth Ambassador for Peace for North Africa. In attendance were also representatives and experts a number of international organizations and thinktanks such as the Arab Water Council, Arab Network for Environment and Development, Capacity Building International, CGIAR, FAO, IOM Regional Office in Cairo, and UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science in the Arab States.

This regional consultation will feed into the preparation of the Africa Continental Climate Risk Assessment (ACCRA) report, as requested by the AU Peace and Security Council in its Communiqué of the 1051st Meeting of 22 November 2021 on “Climate Change Peace and Security: The Need for an Informed Climate-Security-Development Nexus for Africa”. The ACCRA report will inform the African Union common African position on climate change and security.

The consultation examined the linkages between the climate change, peace and security nexus in North Africa, identified climate change impacts on vulnerability and resilience, explored mitigation tactics on the African Union, regional, and national levels, and identified solutions and best practices from the region and the way forward for supporting climate adaptation and resilience.
