CCCPA Hosts the Challenges Forum Report-Back Workshop
18 September 2018

Cairo, Egypt - In cooperation with the Secretariat of the International Forum for the Challenges of Peace Operations, CCCPA, in its capacity as a Forum’s partner, hosted a workshop on the Considerations for Mission Leadership in UN Peace Operations studyfrom 12-13 September 2018.

The Considerations Study was first published in 2010 by the Challenges Forum Partners, in close cooperation with the UN Secretariat. The Study aims to provide guidance on what senior mission leaders in United Nations peacekeeping operations need to consider when planning and implementing their mandates. It addresses potential tensions and challenges in leading contemporary peacekeeping operations and identifies best practices for more effective decision-making.

Since its publication, the Study has been widely used by peace operations training institutions in Member States, and in the UN Senior Mission Leadership (SML) courses. However, given that peacekeeping operations and the contexts in which they are being deployed to have changed significantly since 2010, the Considerations Study is now being reviewed to reflect the operational realities on the ground.

The Cairo workshop brought together the co-chairs of three task forces responsible for reviewing/updating the “Considerations Study”.  It aimed to take stock of the review progress achieved to date, and to come to an agreement on the next steps towards finalizing the Study in November. The revised Study will be published in 2019.

As co-chair of Task Force 2, CCCPA leads and coordinates the revision of the chapters related to the primacy of politics and sustaining peace. Participants of the workshop included the Challenges Forum International Secretariat, the United Service Institution of India (USI), Australian Civil-Military Centre (ACMC), Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute (PKSOI), the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA), and the Institute of Security Studies of South Africa (ISS). The Workshop also heard presentations on leadership and strategic communications by two former Special Representatives of the Secretary-General,  Ms. Diane Connor, Central African Republic and Mr. Farid Zarif, Liberia and Kosovo.
