CCCPA Briefs UN General Assembly High-Level Thematic Debate on UN, Peace & Security
10 May 2016

New York – CCCPA is participating in the High-Level Thematic Debate (HLTD) organized by Mogens Lykettoft, President of the General Assembly (PGA), entitled “In a World of Risks: A New Commitment for Peace”, on 10-11 May 2016.

CCCPA was invited by the PGA to brief the HLTD on key messages emerging from regional meetings previously organized around the world in preparation for the debate. CCCPA will be joined by NUPI (Norway), ACCORD (South Africa) and Igarape (Brazil) on this endeavor. Accordingly, the three organizations have come together to produce a related policy brief.

H.E. Amre Moussa, Chairman of CCCPA International Advisory Board, delivered a keynote speech at the opening session of the HLTD. Moussa emphasized that meaningful reform at the UN will require both reform of the Security Council (UNSC) and the revitalization of the General Assembly’s (GA) role. He also highlighted some of the key recommendations of the UN reviews, most notably the primacy of politics and the urgency of stronger partnerships between the UN and regional organizations, in particular the African Union and the League of Arab States.

CCCPA has played an important role in the preparation of the HLTD. It organized two major preparatory meetings: (i) the High-Level Arab Workshop (1-2 March 2016, Cairo), and (ii) the African Consultation (4 March 2016, Addis Ababa) - organized jointly with ACCORD and the African Union (AU). These events are part of CCCPA’s continuous engagement in the global policy debate with regards to the future of UN involvement in peace and security, and also include an international workshop on the regional aspects of peacebuilding (November 2014) and the MENA consultations of the High Level Independent Panel of UN Peace Operations (March 2015).
